Reasons For Replacing Your Screen Door

When screen doors have already served their purpose for many years, you need to remove or replace them. To some it is more practical to replace a screen door than repair them. Here are some reasons for removing it:

1. The screen is damaged

The screen mesh may be vulnerable to damage if it has been installed a few years ago. It can also be due to accidental contact of a sharp object. Even pets can shorten your screen door's lifespan with their sharp nails. The screens have the tendency to tear, if exposed to these elements. If you are thinking about patching screens, the effort will be rendered useless because it will make the door look odd. It diminishes the screen's appeal if you consider patching it. If a small part is damaged, it will be better to replace the entire thing.

2. Rust

Rust can do a serious damage to your screens as it weaken the link between your frame and screen. Rust causes the screen mesh to come off. If you have a wooden frame, the screw or nail with which the mesh is attached can get rusted especially if it has long been exposed to wind and rain. Connections become weak once the frame is rusted.

3. The Screen is Torn

Screens are attached to a steel, aluminum or wooden frame. Any stress on the screen can cause the screen to detach from the frame. If the screen is torn, it will no longer serve its purpose. Instead of repairing it, replacing the screen will be a more practical option.

4. Damaged Door Hinges

If your door hinges malfunction or get damaged, it will also affect your entire screen. This happens when hinges get rusted. The door will be difficult to open or close properly once the door hinges are jammed. If you intend to repair door hinges, you need to open the entire door. It can be a long process.

If you see signs of wear and tear, it is much better to consider replacing the screen door. Screens are supposed to be an additional decoration and protection for your home, but if it no longer functions properly, you need to replace them. While may attempt to repair the screen, patched screens look unsightly and there is no guarantee how long the repaired screen will last. Be sure to choose strong and durable screens so you can prevent replacing them on every year. Always go for high quality screens which are meant to last longer.

Keeping your house neat and clean is very important; otherwise, it will look dusty, dirty, and an uncomfortable place to be. And just like all the other parts of of your house, it is equally important to keep your fly screens clean and dust-free. This article talks about the different ways in which you can make the most out of your fly screen, specifically in terms of the area you live in and the type of screen that you are using.

Where do you live?

Different areas require different schedules for cleaning your fly screens:

Rural area. If you are residing in a rural area, then most likely your house is prone to dust and dirt build-up. The slightest change in weather may also cause your place to be muddy at times. In rural areas, you should thoroughly clean and maintain your fly screens every three to six months.

Coastal area. In the same way, coastal areas are also prone to build up -- of salt, that is. Over time, salt can make your screen brittle, heavy, and grey-colored. If you live in a coastal area, then you should be cleaning and maintaining your fly screens every six months.

Urban area. Meanwhile, urban areas are prone to pollution. All that dust from the city streets can make your fly screens extremely dirty. And so, in urban areas, you need to clean and maintain your fly screens every six months.

What type of screen are you using?

The procedure for cleaning your fly screens is also dependent on the type of screen that you are using:

Retractable or pleated type screens. If your screen is the retractable or pleated type, you can begin by retracting the screen into its starter track or cassette. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the tracks and clear off debris. Then, extend or roll out the screen again. Using a soft brush, gently scrub the screen with mild and soapy water. If your screens are are fitted on the outside, you can rinse the soap gently with a garden hose. Be careful not to use too much pressure! Afterwards, wipe the screen down using a soft cloth. When the screen is dry, you can spray a silicon-based lubricant on the tracks for a perfect finish. The great thing about these screens is that when you are not using them, they are kept clean and free from build-up once retracted.

Fixed security screens. If you are using a fixed security screen, you can begin by placing some towels on the floor in order to prevent water from damaging the floor as you work. Then, wipe down the frames and screens using a soft cloth or a soft brush dipped in mild, soapy water. Rinse the screen gently, and then let it dry. Similar to retractable screens, you can also spray a silicon-based lubricant on your fixed security screens.

Removable fly screens. If your screen is the removable type, then be careful when you move them, especially since it can be quite hard to remove if it has been fixed in place for quite a long time. To help loosen it up, you can spray with a silicon-based lubricant. Then, take it outdoors and gently hose down with some water. Use a soft cloth or brush to clean both sides of the screen. Afterwards, rinse the screen gently and allow it to dry before putting it back into place.

By keeping in mind these tips, you can make the most of out your fly screens -- wherever you go and whichever type of screen that you have!
